Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?
One of the most common reasons for removal is lack of space. Wisdom tooth eruptions typically occur after all 28 adult teeth are in place. For many people, there is no room for the wisdom teeth to grow properly, causing them to push the existing teeth out of place. In some cases, this lack of space may result in an impaction where the tooth grows in at an angle causing pain.
Issues with wisdom teeth can cause much more than just a toothache. Gum infections, abscesses, cysts that weaken the jaw bone, damage to existing teeth from pressure may erode the roots of adjacent teeth, and decay from improper cleaning are just some of the problems that may occur. Thanks to advancements in techniques and equipment, the procedure to remove them is now easier with less discomfort.
What Is the Procedure for Extracting Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom tooth removal may be a simple or complicated procedure, depending on the position of the teeth. During the procedure the dentist will use local anesthesia. If an IV sedative is required, patients are referred to a qualified dental surgeon. General anesthesia is only given for very complicated cases and this would be carried out at a hospital.
In most cases, using anesthesia is safe and major problems are rare. Please discuss any concerns about the process with our team.
Removing the wisdom teeth may also be an important step in periodontal therapy or orthodontic treatments. If removal is necessary, we will discuss a variety of sedation choices to make the experience as comfortable as possible.
